As the song says… “Hit The Road Jack (and camp while you can)”!
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the summer season is winding down. So the next couple of weeks will be your last chance to get some camping in. Or if you’re like some of my friends you might prefer to go “glamping”, the glamorous version of camping. This usually entails a cabin or motorhome of some sort. Not quite so “one with nature” and with a lot more amenities close by. Either way, fall is soon to be here, and those hot summer days are coming to an end.
One of the basic needs for camping is a good, waterproof tent. Especially in B.C. where we get a lot of sudden downpours and periods of “liquid sunshine.” You’ve got to love it! But it’s a small price to pay for living in such a beautiful province. Mountain Warehouse has a great selection of tents from singles to large family size.

And they have a large selection of sleeping bags to stay warm and dry at night! But be careful where you stake your tent. There is nothing worse than waking up in a soaking wet sleeping bag, I can tell you from experience –NEVER camp on a hill…I found out the hard way…water runs downhill and it takes days to dry out.

And, an absolute “must” is some good lanterns and flashlights. You’ll need them for those midnight trips to the “loo” and to light up your board games so you can get your game on. Half the fun of camping is those nights of huddling around the lanterns and playing cards or board games. Or just having some quiet time reading a good book from Coles when it’s the rainy days. House of Knives has some fabulous lanterns and flashlights.

And Toys R Us and Sunrise Records have some great board games that will appeal to all ages. Whether you prefer the classic card games like Poker, Yahtzee, or Scrabble or you want to get your geek on with a fun TV themed board game like Supernatural -Trivial Pursuit, Risk-Game of Thrones, or a game of Clue -The Big Bang Theory. My adult kids are so into the Risk game – Game of Thrones. They get super competitive!

You are probably going to be doing some outdoor cooking, whether it be on a Coleman camp stove or on a grill over an open fire. So you will need some basic camping pots and pans and utensils. Some great BBQing tools can be had at Hudson’s Bay, House of Knives, and Mountain Warehouse.

And there are some cooler bags at Mountain Warehouse to hold those hot dogs or potatoes or ingredients for the “ever-popular S’mores”. I don’t know why but hot-dogs cooked on an open fire and potatoes baked in the ashes ALWAYS taste better!! As for the S’mores, talk about your sugar overload! Gooey and yummy!

And I’m a great believer in having those handy gadgets like firestarters, and various survival tools at hand. You just never know when you will need them. There is nothing worse than being wet and hungry. A fire, some food, and a hot beverage warm you right up…and all is well again.

So “Hit the Road Jack” if you can and take advantage of our Beautiful B.C.! We are so lucky to be living here!
